Do Men and Women Use Social Media Differently? Well… Yes!

August 17, 2010 by Tal Sliwowicz

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, our sister company, Invoke Solutions recently ran a live research event on “social media”. They used groketeer to analyze some of the online survey results.

In my last blog post I looked at the direction of complaints over different age groups and it turned out that younger people tend to use social media to complain while a lot of the older people prefer the traditional methods of complaining.

Today I have decided to compare how men and women use social media. The original multiple choice question was “what kind of things do you most frequently share?

The results of this question were interesting:
social media role in life

But things got really interesting when I added the filters “Men” and “Women” and removed the totals (a couple of clicks in the user interface). Here are the results of the original question, now filtered by gender:
social media role in life by gender

Wow. Women are much more likely than men to share “New Product Information” and “Information on sales and deals” on social media. And probably not surprisingly, men share “Sports” information a lot more than women. This is a great example of how using filters with groketeer can help generate more useful consumer insights and better understanding of online survey results.

Looking at the original question without applying the filters simply does not tell the whole story! Adding the filters was very easy to do – just a few mouse clicks, and anyone using our product can use it.

I will keep looking at this data set for more interesting bits of information and will update the blog soon. If you want to download Invoke’s full 45+ page report from Slide Share go to http://www.slideshare.net/invokesolutions/hyper-social-networking-report-slideshare-version.

In the meantime, you should try out groketeer for free with your SurveyMonkey™ data (soon we will be adding many more data types). And don’t forget to give us your feedback. We want to hear from you how to make groketeer even better!
